Two books are relevant to this course - Happiness Dissected and The Origin of Emotions.

The course will cover the contents of Happiness Dissected.  Each Sunday class will review several chapters of this book as detailed in the Topics section of this website. Although this book is not necessary for the course, you will learn more if you read the relevant chapters before class. The course will not follow the book's layout exactly. Please visit the Topic section to know what chapters will be covered each week. Happiness Dissected can be purchased for about $10 at Amazon or Google.

You can learn more about why emotions evolved by reading The Origin of Emotions. While Happiness Dissected focuses on the practical implications of understanding emotions based on their biological purpose, The Origin of Emotions focuses on the theoretical explanation for the evolution of each emotion.
